Chapter 12

Chapter 12- I learned all about Enterprise computing in this chapter, which I knew about somewhat but did not realize how many different operating systems and protocols were involved. There are hundreds of individual operating entities called functional units.

I learned an extranet is the portion of a company's network that allows customers or suppliers of a company to access parts of a company's intranet. It provides a secure connection.

Chapter 8

Chapter 8- I learned a mashup is a web application that combines services from two or more sources creating a new application.

I learned about all the different types of cables used and they are called physical transmission media.

Chapter 7

Chapter 7 I learned that there are different categories of operating systems, the three basic ones are stand alone, server, and embedded.

I learned that screen savers were developed to prevent a problem called ghosting, in which images could be etched permanently on a monitor's screen.

Chapter 6

chapter 6--I learned that a smart card is similar in size to a credit card and can store many types of data such as medical records and they contain a processor and have input, output, process and storage.

I learned that cloud storage is an Internet service that provides hard disk storage to computer users.

Chapter 5

Chapter 5 I learned how a bank processes checks with MICR devices. I never knew how checks were really processed; I knew it had something to do with the routing number and account number on the bottom of the checks but I did not know about MICR and how computers were used with this technology.

I learned that a plotter is a sophisticated printer used to print high quality drawings like blueprints and maps. I did not know how they produced these things before reading this chapter.

Chapter 4

Chapter 4 I learned that the leading manufacturers of personal computer processor chips are Intel and AMD.

I learned that in the time it takes a person to blink their eye a computer can perform some operations 10 million times.

Holly Mckinnon Chapter 3-I Learned there are many types of software used for different reasons and used for many different things. I did not know just how many different types there were.

I learned software could be downloaded to a phone or put on a memory card for business people to use for charts etc.

I learned that Netiquette is the term used for acceptable behaviors users should follow while on the internet.

I learned that the internet was started by the US Department of Defense and was called the ARPANET, it became functional in 1969 and it linked scientific and academic researchers.

I learned MySpace was started as a way to post Tom Anderson's songs after his rock band failed.

I learned a small office/home office is a company with fewer than 50 employees AS WEll as the self employed that work from home.
